[comp.sys.mac.programmer] All kinds of questions

mithomas@bsu-cs.bsu.edu (Michael Thomas Niehaus) (07/28/89)

O.K. I have been saving up questions for a while to avoid posting lots of
one-liners. So here it goes:

Programming Questions (Lightspeed C):

1. I am having an awful time declaring update routine for userItems in
dialogs. Can someone send a couple of line that show how to do the
    SetDItem?
2. How do you declare a callback routine for the Sound Manager (so you can
tell when an async sound has finished)? Also, how do you set up A5
once you are in the routine?
3. Several people have mentioned the Lightspeed C book that came out
recently. Is it any good? Would it help me with situations like
    above? If not, what would?

Availability Questions:

1. Is the Communications Toolbox currently available to obtain through
    APDA?
2. When will C++ for MPW be available?
3. When will MacX be available? Does it work over a serial line to a
VAX/VMS system running VMS 5.1 (and DECwindows)? Will it need an
    clear 8-bit data path?

General Questions:

1. Does MacWorkstation support color? (Just a thought...)
2. If you want to install AppleTalk for VMS on a MicroVAX, does it need
to run on top of DECnet, or does it just need the hardware? (Yes,
DEC sold a MicroVAX to the university "in a package deal" without
the DECnet software, even though we have a VAXcluster right across
the street.) What type of services does it provide? What about a
    programming interface for VMS?
3. How does a Mac rate in speed to, say, an IBM 50Z? I am talking about
overall speed (the main concern is data retrieval and processing, not
    graphics).

Thanks for any or all answers you can provide.

-Michael

No, the Communications Toolbox is not currently available through APDA.

A beta version will be available through APDA in the next couple of weeks.

When it is available, you can order it at (800) 282-2732.
