[comp.sys.mac.programmer] serial ports & ethertalk

joe@mit-amt.MEDIA.MIT.EDU (Joe Chung) (10/26/89)

Does anyone know why using Ethertalk (NuBus Ether card) should interfere
with the MacII serial port B (printer port)? A serial driver that we wrote
for MIDI cannot operate when Ethertalk is running (i.e. when Appletalk is
enabled from the chooser and the Ethertalk network is selected from the
control panel).

Thanks,

Yes, I know why, Apple did some hard coding of pointers to serial ports
way back when Appletalk was developed. They are 'all over the place' in
the code and supposidly hard to find.

System 6.0.4 docs say this is (Finally) fixed, but I installed it and
STILL CAN'T USE MY PRINTER PORT!!!

I thought that you needed Ethertalk 2.0 in order to use your priner port
and Ethertalk at the same time. I've got Ethertalk 2.0 and I was able to
choose an Imagewriter connected to the printer port on my Mac II.
