Someone asked if we will all miss Hofstedder as much as they would. Not very likely. It seemed clear to me from the start that he would lack staying power. He had a few things to say (which you could read eqully well in his book) and after that -- there was not much left. The series on Lisp was very painful to a closet Lisp lover, esp since I think lisp should be more available to the educated public. He butchered it. I detected to much of a flavor of "Well I have some deep and superior thoughts to let you in on" rather than the old Martin Gardner style of "Gee wiz this is sort-of neat -- hey can you figure out how to..." I will hold judgement on the new department until I see how it develops. ----GaryFostel----
