Apple Rewrite?

In May, Apple Computer promised by the end of the year to announce a
delivery date for shipping a crucial rewrite of its Macintosh operating
system. A spokewoman said the company hopes next week to disclose
approximately when the software will be ready and what it includes.
Rumors persist that Apple's programmers have been having a lot of
trouble with the massive project, and that System 7.0, as it is called,
may not have all the features Apple promised -- at least not in 1990.

One source close to the company predicts that Apple should easily be
able to deliver a new technology for controlling how typefaces are
displayed on a computer screen. But much further ahead, he said, are
new printing functions and the addition of page-layout capabilities.
The latter would insert sophisticated spacing between letters produced
by expensive typesetters.

The new software is critical to Apple's attempt to stay ahead of the
competition. But Apple may still have plenty of time; users of
IBM-compatible computers have been slow to adopt new software -- OS/2
and Presentation Manager -- that provides ease of use, which is a
macintosh hallmark.

[end of quoted story]

Needless to say, I have no idea how reliable this information is. If you
think trade press coverage of computing is bad, you should look at the mass
media coverage. The apparent techological illiteracy expressed in the
ridiculous definition of page layout at the end of the second paragraph
alone should be enough to make readers take this with a grain of salt.
