I'm sure the following request is posted quite frequently in this newsgroup, but please bear with me as I've only recently begun subscribing to it. If you've got a couple of minutes and own a "C" compiler for the mac, please let me know what brand it is and what you think of it. I've heard that there are packages that include shells. I'm also quite fond of "make" and "dbx". I've seen only one compiler, Lightspeed C, and wasn't too impressed with either the docs or the interface, so if you know of a compiler that may be more suited to an old UNIX biggot like myself, please drop me a line and let me know about it. Thanks. -- Rodian Paul Big Electric Cat Public UNIX ..!cmcl2!dasys1!rpaul

Fellow Mac programmers: I am traditionally a C programmer who is somewhat new to the Mac programming scene, and I desire a good C compiler. What are your suggestions? I have heard mostly about THINK C (though I don't know what the latest version number is). What else is out there? What are the pros/cons of Mac C compilers which you have had an opportunity to work with? Any info would be appreciated. Unless you believe your response will benefit many readers, I suggest replies via e-mail. A while back, I posted a request for information about C compilers for the Mac. Thanks to everyone who responded. You were a great help. Nearly all of the responses I received favored THINK C, with a few who liked MPW best. The jist of it seems to be, if you like Unix, and do programming in groups, MPW seems to be the best choice. If you like the Mac interface best, need a good debugger, and aren't willing to shell out the bucks for MPW, then THINK C is for you. I am currently much more of a Unix hacker than a Mac programmer, but I didn't have the money for MPW, so, based upon your suggestions, and the price, I purchased THINK C 4.0 last week. [ I got it from MacConnection for $149 if anyone is interested ] I must say that so far I am extremely satisfied with THINK C. It is a very nice development package. I do wish there was an integrated assembler in it, I am not real fond of inline assembly, and I would like to be able to add assembly source files to the project. But hey, one should rarely have a need to use the assembler anyway with C. Thanks again to all who responded to my query. --Jerry -- Jerry Frain Kansas State University BITNET: jxf@KSUVAX1 Dept. of Computing and Information Sciences Internet: jxf@ksuvax1.cis.ksu.edu Manhattan, Kansas UUCP: ...!{rutgers,texbell}!ksuvax1!jxf

I am interested in porting some UNIX programs (flex and bison for instance, plus some others that I have written) to my Macintosh. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good C compiler to use? I have some familiarity with Think C, but it doesn't seem to suit the task very well. I would especially appreciate advice from anyone out there using Aztec or MPW. Thanks in advance. -- Eric McDaniel mcdan@dtg.nsc.com

There are versions of flex and bison availible via FTP that run under the MPW enviroment. I got my copies from sumex-aim.stanford.edu but I'm sure you could try most any FTP site that does mac software. Not commenting on the quality of the compiler, if you're used to and like unix you'd feel very comfortable in the MPW enviroment in a very short time.
