[comp.sys.mac.programmer] MPW Storage Requirements

torch@attctc.Dallas.TX.US (Jay Finger) (12/19/89)

Here's a summary of the responses I received to the following question,
which I posted about three weeks ago.

>I'm about to buy a new computer, and I'm going to get MPW for it. Could
>somebody out there let me know how much drive space is needed for the
>full system (assembler, pascal, c, c++, sade, etc.) and any temporary
>files the compilers and linker might generate.

Many thanks to the following people who responded:

DRIVE SPACE:
One respondant used Pascal and C said that he used 7 Meg for his MPW
  system.

The four people who use Pascal, C, and C++ used from 10 to 12 Meg.

The four people who use Pascal, C, C++, and MacApp used 8, 13, 18,
  and 20 Meg of space.

A very large factor in the amount of space that is needed is whether
you want to have the sample code available, and whether you want
to have objects both with and without debugging info available.
The latter has the most effect when a large library (e.g. MacApp)
  is being used.

Most people commented that a 40 meg drive would be sufficient for
small to medium projects if the drive isn't also being used to store
a lot of other applications. In general, though, if you're doing
lots of other things with your Mac or you're working on a big
  project you'll wan't an 80 Meg drive.

RAM:
I didn't ask about this, but only because I didn't think about it.
Thanks to those of you who thought to include it.

The comments on memory requirements all ran along the same lines:
You can get by with five meg, but to do the job right you'll need
  eight.
