Is there any way you can insert an AUDIO disk (ie: a standard music CD bought in a record store) into a CD-ROM drive and read the music out as data? Can this sort of thing be done with special software or is there something about the disk format or hardware that prevents it? I'm mainly interested in reading in some music an sound effects DIRECTLY from audio CD's, rather than going through the process of hooking up digitizers to a CD player & such. (I've got easy access to an Apple CD-ROM drive, but coming up with a stereo sound digitizer is MUCH harder) If I could get the 16 bit 44khz stereo data DIRECTLY off a music CD and into memory it would really help. Obviously, this will take quite a bit of memory to store even short snatches of sound, but I plan to process, compress and do some other things to the sound data after I've got it. I can live with reading in the music data a bit at a time, processing it and reading in some more. Please try to reply by usenet mail if possible.
