[comp.sys.mac.programmer] How do I set up my Mac at home as a UUCP node?

gstein@oracle.uucp (Gregory Stein) (01/10/90)

I have a Mac II at home that I would like to turn into a UUCP node
where I can have email sent to and read/post to newsgroups. What are
the steps to doing this? Here is a sort of a sketch of what I think I
know about this:

1) I know there is something called "UUPC" for the Mac that handles
most of this, but it seems like I remember someone said it was
buggy? Is it and is it the right piece of software for what I
   need?

2) I think I have to contact a local business or school in the area
(Mountain View, CA) that would provide me with a news/mail feed.
Are companies/schools generally willing to do this? Do they usually
charge money (since I would be using their computer time to get
newsgroups and mail and my mail may sit on their machine for a bit
   before I pick it up).

3) The node that I create needs to be registered. Apparently, I can
send this to nca-maps@apple.com for my area. Is this all that is
required besides setting up information with my feed?

I would be very grateful to any pointers people might have. I've been
using UUCP for years, but never looked into setting up my own node.
If anyone is interested in the information that I gather, send me mail
and I'll forward you the info in a couple weeks.

Thanx much in advance.

But I don't have e-mail access.

(Thus this note here, instead of an e-mail direct, SORRY everyone)

So PLEASE post your results.

There is a port of the UUPC code for THINK C 4.0 that supports slave
operation. It is NOT Multifinder friendly currently and does not
operate in the background.

The person that ported the software has posted it to c.b.m and it
will appear when the gods permit.

If you need additional info, I will try to answer your questions.
Send mail to either my office or my mac at home (see .sig). Feel
free to drop me a line if you want.
