[comp.sys.mac.programmer] Question, MPW vs. ???

wahl-e@bluegill.cis.ohio-state.edu (Edward A Wahl) (02/15/90)

First off I'd like to thank all those who sent me E-Mail about my MDS question.
Our Mail server crashed and I lost it all, but its been backed up.
My question now is this: If MPW is soo good compared to MDS and general assemblers, why does everyone keep complaining about all the bugs? If I'm going to use a good system, it had best NOT have any bugs. Is there full support of 68020 and 69030 through MPW? Does anyone know if there is a GOOD assembly language out there? How does C and C++ stack up in comparison?(especially Think C)
Well, the reason I ask, is that I have an extensive assembly background from the PC's, and heard that assembly for the Mac was awesome in comparrsion. So I checked out MDS ver.0.9 here at OSU.(They use it as an intro to assembler for undergrads) Any word on this would be much appreciated, especially from Apple.
Thanks in advance, Ed Wahl

I have never heard about any bugs in MPW assembler. Only C (and C++?)
versions 3.0 and up. The assembler has been around a long time, is full-
featured, and rock solid as far as I have ever heard.

Are you talking now about assembly programming the Intel chips vs. the
Motorola chips? Or when you say "awsome" are you talking about the
assemblers' features and capabilities? I'd guess the MPW assembler is
about as good as you can get, but that probably has nothing to do with
PC programming vs. Mac programming. I'm sure both machines have
equally good (and equally crummy) assemblers available.

Disclaimer: I can't actually say much about MDS in comparison with MPW
or any other assembly based systems, as I only have experience with MPW.
