[comp.sys.mac.programmer] MacWrite file format -- early versions of Tech Notes #11 and #12

6600pete@ucsbuxa.ucsb.edu (GurgleKat [Pete Gontier]) (02/24/90)

I need to know the MacWrite file format, after all this time. I know we are
supposed to consult Claris on this, but I figured unless I get lucky and
someone at Claris is reading this, getting their documents is going to take
a couple of weeks. Older (pre-Claris) copies of Tech Notes #11 and #12 would
be helpful, I suppose, but I would still need an explanation of difference
between the "memory-based" format and the "disk-based" format. What I really
want is a format that programs which import MacWrite files will read,
including PageMaker, Word, and the later versions of MacWrite itself.

Reply via mail and I will summarize any non-Tech Note info I receive or
possibly simply post any of the older Tech Notes I receive (instead of a
few dozen people posting complete copies...).

If folks would like, I would be more than happy to archive the Claris Tech
Notes on Apple.com if I could get electronic copies of them. How about it
Dennis & co. Think this might be possible?

Since what you really want is to read a number of file formats, have
you investigated Claris' XTND technology? It allows you to access multiple
file translator code modules from your program, and gives you the data in
simple packages.

Limits are pretty much those of MacWrite II: Word files don't include table
or absolute positioning of graphics, only one set of left and right headers
and footers, etc. Claris seems open to suggestion (hi Mike & Hank!) about
adding information to the interchange format.

I think Apple is also doing some work on interchange file formats, but
haven't heard any specifics. Anyone want to add info? No need to make us
wait till May :-)

I'm going to start on XTND for EndNote as soon as my boss lets me...
