[comp.sys.mac.programmer] 4-Tone/Wave Table Synth

c60a-3ec@e260-4f.berkeley.edu (Matthew Hills) (03/05/90)

A while back I posted, asking about Sound stuff. I have ftp'd some notes on
the Sound Manager from Apple, and have a few questions:
-------------------------------------------------------
"The Sound Manager is a replacement for the older Sound Driver documented in
Inside Macintosh Volume II. The abilities of the Sound Driver are currently
supported by the Sound Manager and it will utilize future hardware
improvements. The Sound Manager offers more flexible ways of doing things,
includes new features and options, all requiring less programming effort."

"Do not mix older Sound Driver calls with the newer Sound Manager routines.
The older Sound Driver should no longer be used. The Sound Manager is its
replacement, providing all of it predecessor's abilities and more."

"Limitations of the Wave Table Synthesizer;
%	This synthesizer is not functioning on a .i.Macintosh Plus; or
.i.Macintosh SE;."
-------------------------------------------------------
Okay, I have a Mac SE, so it is fairly apparent from the last quote that
the Wave Table Synth is not implemented on my machine.

Thus, in order to get multiple notes (I have music written for 3 voices),
I would need to go back to the Sound Driver's 4-Tone Synth? Even though the
second quote says not to?

I read in Inside Mac (can't quote it now), that the 4-Tone Synth is now
defined in terms of the Wave Table Synth.

Does this mean that since the Wave Table Synth isn't implemented, that the
4-Tone isn't implemented either?! (that would be seriously lame)

Thanks much for any responses (news or e-mail is fine)

I wrote about this topic last month. 4-voice synthesis works fine on a Plus
or an SE, if you use the good old IM Vol2 Sound Driver. The Sound Manager
documentation claims to supplant it. The documentation lies, ignore it, and
go back to vol 2.

I even disassembled hypercard to see how they were doing telephone touch tones
(which are each a 2-note chord.) Hypercard just calls Sound Driver.
