[comp.sys.mac.programmer] how fast is Mac over ethernet?

yost@esquire.UUCP (David A. Yost) (04/09/90)

Has anyone clocked MacTCP?
How long does it take to send 10Mbytes
 * memory to memory
 * disk to disk
 * on various Mac models?
 * with various Ethernet cards

Similarly, how fast is AFS at serving
a large file across ethernet?

If anyone has any of these numbers,
would they please share them with us?

State of the art in 1990 (the famous Van Jacobson
TCP/IP implementation that will be in 4.4bsd) is
full ethernet speed from one 4.4bsd VAX 750 to another.

Our Benchmark on file transfer on MACs includes:

8 MByte file (plain file) sending fetching (time in sec)

TOPS AppleEtherTalk - KineticsFP 1560 960 Mac II / Mac IIcx

Hardware: Macintosh II, 5MB memory, 256K RAM Cache, Peripheral Land 140MB
	  hard disk, Asante NuBus Ethernet Card, talking to Data General
	  AViiON 300 UNIX workstation

Software: InterCon TCP/Connect II talking to UNIX FTP

Memory->Memory (RAMdisk -> /dev/null):		136.9 seconds	(74.8 KB/s)
Disk->Disk					173.2 seconds	(59.1 KB/s)

Disclaimer: I'am a co-author of TCP/Connect II, but you're more than welcome
	to check my figures :-)...

I tried on my machine, MacIIx, 4 Meg RAM. 187k/second. disk to disk
MacIIx --> NeXT, MacTCP. The two machines are on the same ether cable about
40 feet away from each other.

It would also be interesting to note the comparative performance under
(uni)Finder and MultiFinder.
