#N:uiuccsb:4400017:000:715 uiuccsb!akhtar Oct 13 08:59:00 1983 With respect to the future of Commodore International Inc.: The latest information I have received states (not direct quote): Commodore has acquired a licence from Zilog to manufacture the Z8000. Licences for use of CPM 86, MS-DOS and a number of other items in the same general category (16 bit software) have been obtained from the appropriate people. This seems to back up the recent rumor of m/cs based on the Z8000. We may not see them soon but I expect something will be forthcoming. Another interesting item is that they have started production of 64K rams (volume prodn expected by the end of the fiscal year), since they appear to be unreasonably priced on the open market. ...pur-ee!uiucdcs!akhtar

For what its worth, I received a letter from Commodore Intl., Computer Systems Division, requesting literature/info on some UNIX(tm) software. Here's the lead-in paragraph: Commodore, the world's largest manufacturer of microcomputers, will soon begin production of a new Z8000 based microcomputer to be distributed world- wide. It will employ a UNIX compatible Operating System, to take advantage of the large number of existing software packages under that OS. So, unless they are just fishing, you can add (some flavor of) UNIX to the CPM86 & MS-DOS previously mentioned. Just think, UNIX systems being sold in Toys R Us, et al. Dubiously yours, Brent Byer PS Commodore didn't `tm' UNIX
