BEWARE! It doesn't do superscripts and subscripts as claimed. That is, any character with a descender (like p and g, etc.) comes out two dots high (kind of like: suPerscriPt). It is not clear whether Oki intends to fix the bug or not, in fact it's barely clear that they admit that it's a bug. d. gluss

I agree that the superscript and subscript of the 92 are pretty bad, but they are no worse than the {super|sub}scripts of other dot matrix printers in that class. The Epson uses only uppercase for {super|sub}scripts. Shades of Silent 700's! eric ...!seismo!umcp-cs!aplvax!eric

#R:sri-arpa:-373400:uiucuxc:3700061:000:897 uiucuxc!kline Aug 7 16:46:00 1983 I'm willing to live with that. I just bought a 92 printer and I'm very happy with it. The downloadable character set and the dot-addressable graphics more than make up for the superscripting bug. And it has a vertical formatting unit almost exactly like IBM 3203 Forms Control Buffers. *Very* sophisticated (also means I can write, with very little support software, listings downloaded from our IBM 4341 and send them to my printer and they paginate properly). I don't know about reliability yet; it seems well constructed, although the cabinet gets a little warm by the power supply after being on for a while. Also the high-inertia print head is VERY noisy and the form advance gears make a disquieting clanking noise. At least the head transport system is more than the plastic gears and rubber belt of the Epson series. Charley Kline, U of I CSO. {ihnp4,pur-ee}!uiucdcs!uiucuxc!kline

...better late but never... the Epson FX80 uses BOTH upper AND lower case for super/sub scripts... it does it by making two passes first for the even dots and the other for the odd dots thus making a half high version of the character. it works for ANY character. it is also quieter, seems sturdier, and is better looking than the Oki 92. ...as well as having a 16 bit (sortof) version of a z80 (sortof) inside... will take lots more rom and some more ram with little/no mods... -- Kevin ps. the graphics modes are better and there is no comparison anywhere for a better manual than the FX80 has. only HP calculators can rival this manual (tho it does have a couple of typo type errors)

The Okidata 92 printer appears to have from a Zenith Z-120 computer become extremely popular. I was at a recent computer show in the New Jersey Meadowlands and there was a price war going on between vendors of the Oki. I bit and picked one up for $425, no tax, no shipping, no credit card fee. The moral of the story: go to these shows, you can get great buys, although your dealer support may be somewhat less than you'd get from neighborhood dealers.
