Ok, this one has me stumped. Big time. Using ThinkC 4.0 we've written some code that uses the ANSI libraries, with the only toolbox calls being used for manipulating the serial port. When running the code with the debugger, sometimes we get an illegal instruction error, sometimes not. It seems to occur somewhere in scanf. I think. I don't have access to MacsBug here, so I don't know exactly what instruction is causing the illegal instruction trap nor do I know how the instruction can work sometimes and not others. (Hence this posting). Just to round out the information: the environment is an SE/30 with 5M of RAM, running multifinder of course, system 6.0.4.
