[net.micro] Commodore 64

Does anyone know what magazines would carry INFORMATIVE articles on
the new Commodore 64 micro? Will the Commodore magazines (Power/Play,
Commodore Mag) cover technical details? I dont want to spend any money on
a mag that will just tell me how to run games on the thing. I called the
editor at BYTE and he acted as if he had never even heard of it (typical,
if it's not IBM, Apple, or TRS-80 its crap!) Any info would be welcomed.

The August and September 1982 issues of COMPUTE! magazine carry some
excellent articles on the Commodore 64 computer. They discuss such
features as sound generation (fantastic) and the graphics resolution.
It seems that you can decide how much resolution you need by setting
it for text, low resolution or high resolution. This saves screen
refresh memory if you don't really need high resolution. The color
generation is also quite spectacular I gather from the articles. In
general is sounds like an excellent computer for the money. COMPUTE!
magazine specializes in information and programs for Apple, Atari and
Commodore home computers. If you have a Vic-20, the magazine is a must.

Well I think It is about time to invest in something a little more on the
entertainment side and it looks like the C64 maybe the current machine of
choice. However, before I invest in such a project I need to know some
rather simple information form current owners of these beasts. First,
are there any "neat" joysticks available for the C64, where neat here is
defined to be sculpted handle with trigger or thumb activated fire
button. Second, for those of you with both a cassette and a disk drive,
are the disks significantly faster? and is there sufficient advantage to
pay the extra bucks? (do you recommend both for instance, and can you use
the cassette to back up a disk?) Also I already have a 1200 Bps modem, can
I hook an RS-232 port to the C64 and tell it that I have a modem attached?
Can I run the C64 through a terminal attached to the RS232 port and thus
get the 80 cols ? Finally, where is the best place to buy one, and what
should I look out for when I see it demonstrated at the store.

Thanx a million in advance, I will definitely post a summary if more
than a couple people reply, will certainly send summaries to anyone
who requests one.
