[comp.sys.mac.programmer] Communicating with the Modem

I am writing some BBS software for the Mac and I need some help communicating
with the modem. I have all the input and output routines written. What I 
need to know is how to tell if the modem loses carrier, answers the phone,
what baud rate the connection is made at and other misc.. info like that that
is not available from the SerStatus toolbox call. I am using Turbo Pascal
(cause I can't afford Lightspeed Pascal and don't know C yet.) on a Mac SE.
Hayes compatible modem, of course. Any help you can offer would be appreciated.
