I believe it means the apps don't twiddle bits in the pointers and handles.
I guess the 24-bit Memory Manager did that and apps started doing that too
despite Apple's warnings that the 32-bit MM would, of course, use all the
bits for the addresses. Only lots of apps still do it 'cuz it faster/easier.

This is just the impression i've garnered though. Don't quote me on it.
