[net.micro] Coleco's Adam

ggr@pyuxbb.UUCP (09/28/83)

Mark asks whether you have to buy the ColecoVision game console
(model 2400) to get an Adam. The answer is no. You can buy
either a model 2404 Adam which attaches to the 2400 ColecoVision
(for $437.77 from Service Merchandise, list $499.95)
or the model 2410 Adam which stands alone (for $549.90 from
Consumer's Distributing, list $699.95). So say the catalogs.
The difference, as you might expect, is somewhat less
than the price of the ColecoVision.

Also, what Mark said looks like and extra ':;' key where ESC should
be is an '|\' key, next to the '1'.

Guy, you sound like you've seen an Adam.
Is it the perfect machine for me?

It is finally out. I actually saw one yesterday. It was not hooked
up so I didn't get to play. What I did see looked nice. The keyboard looks
like full ASCII and it has a nice feel. Does anyone own one yet? What
I would like to know is:

	1) RS-232 interface. Does it have one? Does the literature say
	   about any in the future?

	2) Is the printer just a 'straight' daisy wheel or can you do
fancy things with it (super/sub scripting, dot graphics, etc.)?

	3) Software. It comes with "SmartWrite (tm)" and "SmartBasic (tm)".
How about an assembler? Are the internals documented so you
           could write your own games?

	4) Mass storage. Just how fast is the "digital data pack", operated
	   with "FastTransfer (tm)"?

Basically what I am asking is: Is it worth the $400? (I already have
ColecoVision (tm)).

						Jeff

P.S. I will summarize anything worth it and post them.

The BASIC supplied with the Coleco is on tape, not in rom. It is a Z80
basic one would assume since that is the CPU ship used, but it claims
Apple basic compatibility on the source level. There is no peek or poke
or any other way I can figure out to get a look at ram (that's compatible??)

I will indeed run the benchmark for you and report back.

P.S. I am cc'ing the Adam information to INFO-CPM since there will
definitely be a CP/M capability in the Adam in the near future. If
I am incorrect that the list is interested in this machine, please
advise and I will stop clogging the net with unwanted messages.
