[comp.sys.mac.programmer] USENET Macintosh Programmer's Guide is Final

mxmora@unix.SRI.COM (Matt Mora) (10/20/90)

The UMPG is finally finished! A few more article have been added and the page
number problem has been fixed. I have posted it to comp.sys.binaries.mac and
sumex-aim.stanford.edu. My site here does not have anonymous FTP access so I
canUt set it up that way. (If anybody else can put it put for FTP, email me and
I'll send you a copy)

For those of you who don't know what the UMPG is, its a compilation of
articles that appeared in the comp.sys.mac.programmer newsgroup and articles
donated by the readers of c.s.m.p. Most of this guide is real world working
code and not some theoretical, gee this should work mumbo jumbo.

Converting the guide into other formats proved to be very disappointing so
there will only be three versions available, Microsoft Word 4.0, plain text and
the printed version. There is a chance that the guide will appear on the next
Developers CD-Rom disk from Apple. I just sent it to Mark Johnson at Apple.com
and I hope he can get it in on time. (Gee I hope that wasn't supposed to be a
secret :-))

I regret to say that I wasn't able to get and index included with the guide.
Version II will have an index. If I could only convince Paragon Concepts Inc.
to donate a copy of NISUS 3.0 so I can do the next version right, then then
next version will have a beautiful index. :-) Also their macro programming will
make it a lot easier to format the guide. Anyway...

The printed version costs a little more to make than I expected but I think its
worth it. As anyone who has tried to print out this document can tell you, it
takes a long time. Also, once you print it out you have about a 2.5" thick book
and no way to bind it. The printed version is half as thick (obviously because
its printed on both sides ) , spiral bound and has a clear acetate front cover
and black back cover. This is much more durable than a three hole punched
version. The final version is a whopping 290 pages. If you would like a copy,
it will set you back $17.00. I have to make 10 copies at a time to bring the
price down. The prototype cost me $38.00 to make! If you want the printed
version send a check or money order for $17.00 to:

USENET Mac Programmers Guide
Printed Version

Fremont, CA 94538

( I think the $17.00 cost should cover mailing this thing anywhere in the US.
If you live outside the US, email me and I'll see if I can send it to you
without an extra cost.)

If you don't have FTP access, anyway to get the files electronically or you
would rather just get it on a floppy disk instead, then a disk version is also
available. For a disk version send a check or money order for $5.00 to:

USENET Mac Programmers Guide
Disk Version
39075 Carmel ct.
Fremont, CA 94538

If you just can't wait to get the guide, send me a note and I will email it to
you. But remember that your mailer must be able to handle mail >100k or it will
barf. (probably doubling the already busy network traffic).

I would like to say thanks to all of you (the netfolk) who have contributed
articles and answered questions on the net. You have made the guide a complete
success. I feel that I am a much better programmer now by reading this
newsgroup and being involved with this project. I'm sure a lot of others might
feel the same.

Again, I thank you.

Matthew Xavier Mora
