[comp.sys.mac.programmer] Plea to the writers of the Tech Notes

nick@cs.edinburgh.ac.uk (Nick Rothwell) (10/19/90)

I've just printed myself a copy of Tech Note #184.

It's taken me about an hour to do so.

The tech notes seem to be hand-crafted in layout for US-size paper.
Because we use A4 in Europe, every tech note has to be re-formatted
with reduced margins, the tab stops have to be moved, the fixed
page boundaries have to be removed and repositioned, and it takes a
number of printings to get it right.

This is all in MS Word - MacWrite chokes on the Tech Notes completely,
overwriting words with each other, advancing past the end of the file,
and all kinds of junk.

So, PLEASE, folks, write your tech notes so that they can be printed
on A4 paper as well as US. I'm sure the solid lines between sections
and the flashy header look good on your paper, but not on ours (the
heading degenerates into "Develop Technical Sup", and the separators
look like this:)

I also don't get what I assume is supposed to be an Apple logo at
the top - do I really need to have the Dingbats font (or whatever)
loaded just so I can print tech notes?

Anyway, I now have a reasonably readable copy of the Notification
Manager tech note (from page 1 of 5 all the way to page 6 of 5).
All I have to do now is reformat the remaining 200-odd...

Amen.

Are you using a genuine Apple LaserWriter? Our QMS 2200PS has real Adobe
PostScript but does not have the Apple symbol in its Symbol font, so my
printed copies of the TNs come out minus the Apple.

I too hope that apple and other american companies realize that here in
europe other papersizes (in casu: A4) are used.

Up till the time they realize this the following recipe might be usefull.

(it works only with printers that have printer-scale ability, such as
the laserwriter (or any other postscript printer))

1 Load the technote in your favorite word processor. I use NISUS but
any other that uses the standard printer dialog boxes supplied by the
printer driver should work. Note that with MS Word you should select
"Page setup" with the shift key depressed (I thought you get the standard
printer box that way; I haven't used MS Word for a while).

2 Select page setup (after having chosen the right printer of course)

3 In the dialog box you get now there should be an entry called "scaling"
(or something like that). It is initialised to 100%.

4 Set this value to 94% and return to your document.

5 You see that the document is much better now, but check all page breaks
before you print. There might be some pages that are nearly empty.

6 If you like to do so, add a nice header or footer.

I hope this works for you.

BTW: I managed to get the big apple logo on the top of the technote by
simply using a real Laserwriter. I haven't seen the logo coming out of
the QMS printer we have here...

Have some nice days reformatting the technotes ! 8-)

I print the Tech Notes with the old MacWrite (5.0). Sometimes (seldom) I get
an extra page (like page 6 of 5) but otherwise there are no problems with
line or page breaks. Of course it would be nice if the Notes wouldn't be
hand-crafted for US paper, but it's not a big problem. The important thing
is that the Notes are written and made available. I guess you could avoid the
problem completely by using a US system disk when printing.
