Greetings and Salutations to you in net.land. We are looking for any sort of leads for CP/M systems running under UNIX. This may include software-only solutions, but we are really interested to find out if anyone has a Multibus board that runs CP/M with some kind of device driver under UNIX that talks to it. If the board itself would connect to floppy disk drives, we would be very pleased. As always, I will summarize interesting responses to the net. Thanks in advance. Morris Kahn Micro/Tel, Inc. We have a CP/M simulator which runs under unix. It is a Z80 machine code simulator, running an image of CP/M. It isn't exactly what you described (a board attachment), but software written for CP/M runs AS IS. The simulator uses two standard UNIX files to simulate the disk drives. --Jim O'Toole

is this simulator in public domain? -- Kevin

VENIX 86 is indeed produced by Venturcom. However, Venturcom's exclusive distributor is UniSource Software Corp., 71 Bent Street, Cambridge, MA 02141. Phone is 617/491-1264. It is said to be a full scale Unix version 7 implementation for the IBM-XT. --Bill

In reference to ron@brl-vgr's comment about Venix... What's Venix got to do with CPM? Venix, like Xenix, UTS, and Unity, is an O.S. based on original UNIX source. As of a couple of years ago, it had V7 system calls and V6 filesystem and was targeted primarily for the non-split I/D PDP-11's. Now I understand that they distribute systems for the VAX also. The company is VenturCom and they are located in Cambridge, Mass, near MIT.

From: Dave Farber <farber%udel-eecis1.udeecis@udel-ee.arpa> Venix is also available for the IBM PC

From: Ron Natalie <ron@brl-vgr> There is also a commercial product out called VENIX I believe (not to be confused with either DEC's VNX or being some UNIX lookalike). I remember getting some junk mail on this (thank you USENIX for selling the UNIX Conference mailing list to these jokers). I'm not sure but the company may have been VentureCom? -Ron

From: Ron Natalie <ron@brl-vgr> Unfortunately there are two UNIX products called VENIX out and I got mixed up as to which is whose. VenturCom's as stated is their trademark for their UNIX system. Another company had announced a product called VENIX (I am pretty sure of this) on a postcard with little hearts on it. It was supposed to be a CP/M implementation under UNIX. Since I had no use for such a tool, I through the card away. I assume they got my name from the USENIX association mailing list, but maybe not. Perhaps you should ask UNIX-WIZARDS if anyone who gets the UNIX junk mail that I do actually bothers to keep any of it. Just to make things worse DEC's "something like UNIX only different" under VMS is called VNX (also pronounced for those who insist on pronouncing things like this, as venix). -Ron
