[net.micro] Query abt. Franklin

pcc@hlhop.UUCP (11/17/83)

I recently purchased a Franklin Ace 1200 OMS. It has many desirable features,
but I ran into a limitation with the printer interface. (Ace Dual Interface.)
It can't be used to set the printer up for 80 column mode. According to the
manual, (^IN and ^I80N have the same effect, and that is just to turn off the
video output.) Most other boards will use the number provided the set the
number of columns to print. Typically, a number from 40 to 255. After looking
over the boards available in my local computer store, I bought a Grappler+ by
Orange Micro, Inc. This provided many graphics features in addition to my
simple columns of print requirement. Now for my problem. The Grappler+ has
Dip switches to accomodate various printer types and to select seven or eight
bit output. Sw. 1 on gives you seven bit, Sw.1 off gives you software control.
Under software control, ^IH gives eight bits and ^IX is supposed to give seven.
My printer, a Panasonic KXP1090, has a standard character set in seven bit form
and an italics character set when the eighth bit is present. If I present the
Grappler with a ^IH I get italics, as expected, but if I send it ^IX, I get a
mixture of block and italic lettering. As though it's getting the eighth bit
intermittently. I can't figure this out. Tech support at Orange Micro assures
me that the ^IX should have the same effect as turning on Sw.1, but it doesn't.
I have exchanged the board, and get the same result. Any information at all
would be much appreciated. Sorry this is so long, but I haven't seen any of
my gear mentioned, so I thought I'd better be explicit.
