[net.micro] TI & Speech

I seem to recall that TI came out with a speech synthesizer for the TI
99/4A. Does one really exist, and if so, how well does it work and
how much does it cost. Does anyone know a place that is selling the
TI 99/4A for a cheap price in the Boston area? Thanks.

TI does, indeed, have a speech synthesizer which plugs into the TI 99/4a
console. I believe that it goes for about $120, unless the rebate deal
is still running (I got mine "free" by buying 6 software packages and sending
the boxtops to TI...*really*). The resulting speech is very good, but
you must have one of the cartridges which uses it. A few games now use
the speech (PARSEC has a *female* voice), Extended BASIC gives you access
to a 300-word vocabulary, and the Terminal Emulator II attempts text-to-speech
(I don't have the TEII but I'm told that phonetic spelling produces fairly
decent speech).
