[comp.sys.mac.programmer] building on the LaserWriter/PostScript printer driver

ajb@cs.brown.edu (Atul Butte) (12/15/90)

Does anyone know whether it's possible to build on the LaserWriter/
PostScript printer drivers? That is, can I write a printer driver
that USES the existing LaserWriter/PostScript driver? Can my
printer driver OPEN and use the existing one?

I would like to add a couple features to the existing drivers,
but I can't rewrite the whole thing. Some things I would like to
add include:

o Adding username/password support in the job dialog for accounting
   information.

o Sending the PostScript output across a network to something
other than a LaserWriter (i.e. maybe a Unix host via MacTCP, etc).

It really seems like this might be possible, but I've never seen
anything come out of Apple discussing it (yes, I've read
Learning To Drive, but didn't see anything in there). Can
anyone help on this (especially from Apple)?

Thanks for any responses. I will, of course, summarize to the net.
