From: Charles Weems <weems%umass-cs@csnet-relay> I had a Kaypro II for about 8 months. Mine was an early release of the current model and had a problem with Drive B hanging up and garbaging disks. My dealer made a simple hardware mod and it worked perfectly for ever after. (I sold it because I wanted a hard disk system -- and the 10 wasn't out at the time.) I understand that the Kaypro 10 has a built in fan. What about the 4? chip weems ps. I should have noted that all current Kaypro II's have the disk glitch fixed. Only the first couple months of the production run have the problem.

From: Bud Spurgeon <SPURGEON@SUMEX-AIM.ARPA> When Kaypro had their disk problem with the II they put extra disk verification in their monitor ROM and then came out with the hardware timing fix. That extra verification is still in the ROM and slows down disk interaction according to a recent column in Micro-Cornucopia magazine. The monitor ROM from Micro-Cornucopia does not have the unnecessary verification steps and therefore will speed up a Kaypro. The 4 doesn't have a fan either so I guess there's the potential for heat problems there if you use it in a hot environment. I really like the silence that comes from not having a fan though. Kaypro has some sort of network out for all their machines now. Does anyone have experience with it? Also, they recently announced a new version for all three of their machines that includes an 8088 add-on with lots of extra memory, so the Kaypro's can run 16-bit code too. Bud -------
