A suggestion for a "research abstact newsgroup" was made on net.general by Stephen Perelgut. I think it is a good idea. I might add that a standard format would be very useful for all items posted. Something that might include: Abstract Author[s] Affiliation[s] Availablity (published somewhere? public domain? could a copy be obtained electronically through the network? etc.) I suggest something similar to the form new network sites fill out when they join USENET. And the subject field should always be used for this newsgroup!!! Tim Curry usenet: duke!ucf-cs!tim csnet: tim.ucf-cs@udel-relay

I also strongly support the creation of this newsgroup. It might possibly
be the best current use of the USENET. Tim Curry noted that a standard
format be used. I second the motion and offer the following up for the
populace's consideration:
The Subject line should be the title of the paper. If the title is too
long or not descriptive (tsk, tsk), something more concise could be
used.
Within the body of the article I recommend the following fields:
Title -
Authors -
Affiliation -
Abstract -
.
.
.
Availability -
For those of us with automatic bibliography systems, it might be nice if this
standard could be fairly rigidly maintained. I realise this might be a problem
for the new/ignorant net users, but perhaps it's worth a try. Comments?

Sounds good. Why doesn't somebody write a program or shell script to prompt for all the proper stuff and post the article in the Standard Format. Post the shell script to net.news.b and it can be included in the misc subdirectory. Everyone should be encouraged to use this program/script. Mark
