[comp.sys.mac.programmer] MacTCP

rfl@oddjob.uchicago.edu (Bob Loewenstein) (03/03/90)

I've got an application where I will want the capability of talking
to a SUN via ethernet. Is MacTCP what I want? Will it allow me to
interface with any language I choose? Is it a manager? a driver?
Any hints and explanations will be appreciated.

Hi folks,

You may or may not be able to help me with this, but I would GREATLY
appreciate any insights..

We are trying to use MacTCP (from APDA) on a MacII. We are having
problems, and APDA is not being particularly helpful.

When trying to access the MacTCP device using the device driver call
PBOpen, we are getting an error #-23 "requested read/write permission
doesn't match driver's open permission" (according to Inside Macintosh).
We are setting the permission parameter ioPermssn (byte 27 of the parameter
block) to the constant 3 (read/write), though we have tried fsCurPerm
(0), fsRdPerm (1) and none of those work either.

If anyone has seen this before, installed MacTCP successfully etc, I
would much appreciate hearing from you. My email is damon@cs.stanford.edu
(probably better than posting replies here)..

Thanks,
Damon

I have source available for MacTCP using Think C4.0 and MPW C via
anonymous FTP from coral.hss.cmu.edu (128.2.229.218)

There is an example of an MPW finger tool and ntp tool. Sorry, I don't
have an example of how to use the Think object.

Can MacTCP be used to comunicate between two different Macs? If so,
is writing a program to do so much different from writing a program
to comunicate with Unix boxes?

As the title says:
Where does one get MacTCP from?

I think it's bundled with NCSA Telnet, available for anonymous ftp from
sumex-aim.stanford.edu in the /info-mac/comm directory. If you don't have
ftp, you need to contact NCSA directly, and they can send a tape, or
something. I don't have their address, but the ncsa.uiuc.edu system
administrators EMail address is Godsil, Joseph M. jgodsil@ncsa.uiuc.edu. He
can probably EMail you the particulars. zaphod.ncsa.uiuc.edu also has the
software available via anonymous ftp in directory /NCSA_Telnet/Mac.
