[comp.sys.mac.programmer] EtherPort II and System 7.0b4?????

lance@hermix.UUCP (Lance Ellinghouse) (03/22/91)

How can I get my EtherPort II running under System 7.0b4????
I called SHIVA and this is what they told me to do:

1) Erase 7.0b4
2) Install 6.0.7 again
3) Install EtherPort II software
4) Reinstall 7.0b4 over 6.0.7.

I don't want to have to go through ALL that again!
Anyone have any other ideas?

Hmmm. I didn't think it was possible. We have Cayman GatorCards that
work (after a few simple steps in ResEdit 2.1), but we have been unsuccess-
ful in getting the Kinetics EtherPort II to work.

I can certainly understand why. I don't want to go through that either.
There's got to be a better way - did the folks at Shiva say when they
might be able to have a real 7.0 compatible installer?

You can write to shiva by writing to "support@shiva.com", if my memory
serves me right. Anyway, please post here and/or send me email if you
figure it out.

Actually, let me tell you how to get the Cayman card to work, and you can
try a modified version of that with the Kinetics and see if that works.
Disclaimer: I'm not responsible if you toast your system in trying this!!!

Install 7.0b4 or greater, and include Apple's EtherTalk in the installation.
You have to go to the "Customize" section to do this. Then boot 7.0 and run
ResEdit 2.1. Open the 7.0 system file, and delete DRVR 127 which is named
".enet". Leave the 7.0 system file open and open the 6.0 system file that
you (presumably) had working with your ethernet board before you installed
7.0 on a second hard drive. Copy the DRVR 127 resource (".enet") to the
clipboard, and then go back to the System 7.0 file and paste it in. Now
copy the "EtherTalk" or "EtherTalk 2.0" file from the 6.0 volume to the
Extensions folder of the 7.0 volume. Restart the machine, go into the
Networks control panel and select EtherTalk. Go into the Chooser and see
if it worked.

With the Cayman card, this appears to work. With the Kinetics card, this
appears to fail. However, the Kinetics card seems to have another DRVR
that goes with it - I think it's ID 17 or something like that. Maybe if
you copy this driver, along with the "EtherPort II" file from the system
folder, it might work. The EtherPort II file should probably go into the
7.0 system folder, but NOT the extensions folder.

The frustrating thing about 7.0 is that sometimes the only reason something
doesn't work is that it is in the wrong folder. I guess if all else fails,
put stuff in the system folder...

Anyway, if you get the Kinetics board to work, let me know...
