Actually, it is possible to run Unix on an 8086 or 8088 without protection, ala Coherent and Venix, et al. because the segmentation on the chip allows for memory management. This memory management is not enforced by hardware, and yes, bad code can trash the system. Memory protection boards do exist that enforce memory protection beyond the segmentation on the chip, while the 286 takes the approach of enforcing the segmentation (i.e., accesses beyond the programmed end of a segment are not allowed), and dynamically limiting the values that can be placed in the segment registers and their interpretation. -- Ken Shoemaker, Intel, Santa Clara, Ca. {pur-ee,hplabs,ucbvax!amd70,ogcvax!omsvax}!intelca!kds
