The Coherent implementation of UN*X runs on the IBM PC. It's $500 for
binaries for the IBM PC. Mark Williams, Chicago, 312-472-6659.

Actually, it is possible to run Unix on an 8086 or 8088 without
protection, ala Coherent and Venix, et al. because the segmentation
on the chip allows for memory management. This memory management
is not enforced by hardware, and yes, bad code can trash the system.
Memory protection boards do exist that enforce memory protection beyond
the segmentation on the chip, while the 286 takes the approach of
enforcing the segmentation (i.e., accesses beyond the programmed end
of a segment are not allowed), and dynamically limiting the values that can
be placed in the segment registers and their interpretation.
