I am slightly familiar with the SUN workstation and the PERQ workstation. In both of these machines, the presence of another window on the screen can imply the presence of another task. The machines both run UNIX variants, and fully understand the idea of multitasking. BUT! What about the Lisa, or the IPM PC? The Lisa runs on a 68000, a machine which can clearly be multitasking. Is the Lisa multitasking? Can different processes run simultaneously and perform i/o to different windows? What about the IPM PC? Microsoft has somehow implemented windowing software on the IPM. What does this mean about the different activities in each window? What happens when one is running some application in one window, and then creates or moves to a different window? Is a different process created? Is the old program information saved somehow? What happens if the new window has some application which dies? Or if you knew the answer would you be president of Microsoft? Jerry Bakin <Bakin @ HI-Multics>
