One enhancement not mentioned about the iAPX 186 (aka 80186) is that the
effective address of memory references is calculated in a hardware adder,
as opposed to a microcode routine (as in the iAPX 86 -- 8086). Intel claims
that an iAPX 186 @ 8MHz is twice as fast as an iAPX 86 @ 5 MHz because of
this.
FYI the iAPX 186 integrates six functions:
- uProcessor
- DMA (two channels)
- timers (three)
- chip select logic and wait state generator
- clock generator
- interrupt controller
