[comp.sys.mac.programmer] ThC 4.04

stevep@wrq.com (Steve Poole) (04/26/91)

I just noticed a mention of ThC 4.04. I upgraded to 4.02 quite a while ago,
and this is the first I've heard of 4.04. What's new? What exactly is
Symantec's upgrade notice policy? And what's the most convenient method
of upgrading? OK, the ? key is now broken.

Actually, Symantec just released 4.0.5, but all releases larger than 4.0.2
are only for people using System 7.0 betas. If you're using 6.0.x, 4.0.2 is
the current release. Later releases have only been distributed via the 7.0
beta CDs and AppleLink.

4.0.4 was posted to AppleLink as a 7.0-compatible version, with caveats
scribbled all over it that that was ALL it was, no improvements, etc.
In the past, Think has posted dot-release updates like this to most online
services and invited broad distribution to Think C licensees; I've not
heard of any intended change in that policy. Think did charge for the
major upgrades (3.x, 4.x), but given that the upgrade was a completely
new package in each case -- new manuals, everything, in fact, except the
wrapping sleeve -- I've felt the ~$60 upgrade fees were reasonable.

I'd expect 4.0.4 (or something like it) to become freely available when
7.0 goes final. There are definitely a set of 7.0 headers, but those are
on the 7.0b4 and 7.0f2 CDs -- i.e. still under nondisclosure. But 5/13
is comin' real soon...
