x <- bug killer A complete article on the construction (hardware) and software for a simple bar code reader was given in the Motorola 6800 (NOT 68K) applications handbook about 6 years (is it really that long) ago. Rummage around your hardware lab and see if they have an old copy. In particular, it explains in great detail the UPC symbols on supermarket items. -- -Brian Kantor, UC San Diego {decvax, ucbvax} !sdcsvax!sdccsu3!brian Kantor@Nosc

Texas Instruments has a consumer grade bar code reader out in a "Speak&Spell" type of product, but I don't know if you can get just the bar code reader. It is not conventionally shaped (ie: it doesn't look like a wand) - instead it looks like a 3 inch plastic disk with a hump in it about the size of a crayon. The whole product sells for like $40 at Children's Palace (et al.). Has anyone tried to use this? PS: Seems to me that I saw an article in the IEEE transaction on Consumer Electronics within the past year on the development of this inexpensive bar code reader. Brian, Saw in a recent Radio Shack catalog a bar code reader addition for their Model 100 that doesn't look too bad. Seems to address several of the common standards. I've been recently working with some Intermec bar code gear - readers and printers -- but they're PLENTY expensive! Regards, David Kirschbaum Toad Hall

Brian, Saw in a recent Radio Shack catalog an accessory to their Model 100 that might suit your needs. It seems to address several of the common industry standard codes. I've been developing software and interfaces between micros, terminals, and Intermec bar code readers and printers lately, but their stuff is VERY EXPENSIVE! Regards, David Kirschbaum Toad Hall

Try ABT, Advanced Business Technology. About one or two hundred dollars. Mail to me if you need the address and phone number of them. ecsvax!julian (919)-737-2517
