I am gathering information about multi-user micros. I would appreciate any info on hardware and prices that can approximate the following: + Support up to 4 users. + Approx. 10MB hard disk. + 1 or 2 floppy-disk drives. + Letter-quality printer. + UNIX-like OS which supports available software packages, i.e. DBMS, C, BASIC, Spreadsheet, Screen editor, etc. Primarily: 1. Password Protection 2. Search Path 3. Named directories 4. Good subset of UNIX-like utilities 5. Multi-task/Multi-user 6. Printer spooling. + CP/M compatability a plus. Any info will be appreciated. If possible, reply by mail and I will post a summary if there is enough responses. Please include price if available. -- Dave Burris ..!ihnp4!ihopa!burris AT&T Bell Labs, Naperville, Il.

It sure sounds like you have described the Fortune 32-16 product line. (It's really written with a colon - not a dash - but my editor has trouble with the colon.) We have all the software you mentioned, and full UNIX. We can easily support 4 users, and with the "Comm B" option, you can CP/M. We use a package called MIMIX (tm). If you have any questions, please call me at 415 595 8444 x 526. (To ARPANET: I hope this message wasn't too commercial. I'm on usenet. There was no way to reply to the info request in less-commercial language. Philip Burton Fortune Systems

#R:ihopa:-11200:minn-ua:9400001:000:629 minn-ua!sew Dec 20 10:41:00 1983 I am also shopping for a multi-user micro, and in doing so I found that the November issue of "Today's Office" magazine had a 12-page table with summaries of many micros. The table also mentions 8-bit single user systems, but the columns gave enough information that I was able immediately rule out many systems, but I still ended up with a couple of dozen candidates for further examination. I'm looking for a 10-user system, so you'll have to study the table with your own requirements in mind. Attack pgs 65-83 with a red pen and mark those which don't have what you need..then study those that are left. Good hunting.
