[net.micro] SA1000 series drives larger than 8Mb??

jpm@bnl.UUCP (John McNamee) (12/16/83)

I am using a system that has an SA1000 series drive in it that has about
8Mb formatted. I want to replace it with one of more capacity. Are there
any drives out there that have the same power, interface, and size as
the kind of drive I have?

The SA1000 interface is mostly gone now, but one mfgr. may still
have higher capacity units, QUANTUM CORP. in Milpitas, CA.

8" Winchesters with SA1000 interface from 8 to 33 meg.

Shugart had a short-lived product called the SA 1100, with formatted
capacities of about 16 and 28 MB. It's probably not available.

For a real alternative, consider Quantum's 8" drives, which have the
*same* interface and capacities of 10, 20, 40, and 80 MB (unformatted).

Quantum is in San Jose, CA.

Shugart will be ending the SA 1000 manufacture soon. There may be
bargains available from Hamilton/Avnet or from major users of that
drive who are clearing excess inventory. Try WANG, Tandy, or Xerox OPD.

Quantum's line now extends to an 85MB unformatted drive using the SA 1000
interface. They have no plans for further development using that interface.
A controller set up for an SA 1000 may not work with the larger Quantum
drives if it cannot access the additional heads. E.g. the 42 and the
85MB both use 8 heads. And, all Q's drives have more cylinders than Shugart's
drives.

Don't buy an SA 1002. That's only 5 mb unformatted.
