The Captibility Checker Stack included with System 7.0 said that MS QuickBasic is incompatible with System 7.0. I called Microsoft Customer Service, and they confirmed that such is the case. They referred me to the QuickBasic tech support people, who also confirmed the problem. Apparently, the Interpreter runs OK, but compiled applications don't. Now for the bad news: nobody I talked to at Microsoft was able to supply a date for when a maintainance release would be available to fix the problem. To their credit, they were pretty frank about the reason. Apparently, MS didn't write the compiler, but purchased it from a third-party vendor. There were some hints that a major rewrite is in the works and that the lack of a maintainance update is related to Microsoft's trying (and failing) to get this new release out in time for the System 7.0 release. I got the distinct impression that the support person I talked to was himself frustrated about the lack of any clear policy decision about if and when a maintainance upgrade would be available. Perhaps those of us who use this product might do a little public gnashing of teeth to encourage MS to get off the dime here. I know there are some Microsoft people who read this newsgroup. It would be really neat if Microsoft would make some kind of annoucement about when an upgrade would be available. -Bill Leue leue@crd.ge.com

Regarding the incompatibility of MS QuickBASIC 1.0's compiler with System 7.0: Does this mean (1) you can't compile a program while running under System 7.0; OR (2) you can't RUN a program which was previously compiled (under a previous System release) under Sys 7.0? I sure hope it's (1) and not (2)! Thanks. -Ralph Gonzalez (rgonzal@elbereth.rutgers.edu)
