I did read a version of IM-VI, though evidently Apple has quite a few
versions floating around. The one I'm talking about is the one DTS
mailed us and which arrived almost on the same day as Quantum Books
received their shipment. I simply assumed that this was the final
version, though there were obvious ommissions (see above). Evidently,
I now must fork over another $40 to own the real IM-VI. Makes me wonder
how committed DTS is to us registered developers.

Just what kind of commitment are you looking for? So far, for $350,
you get much better support than that offered by other companies
for 10-20 _times_ that amount. Those aren't my claims; I'm just
re-iterating what many people on this net who have had to work with
other Tech Support departments have told me.

So what causes you to wonder at the level of commitment by DTS (and,
for that matter, all of the Apple Developer Group, which is responsible
for the actual mailings)? Are you just peeved that you didn't get IM VI
in the mail? Was it ever promised to you?  If so, then hang tight;
it'll show up. If not, then why are you expecting it? Because ADG/DTS
sent you numerous alpha and beta copies of 7.0 and IM VI? If this is
the case, then I'd thank my lucky stars that I worked with a company
that cared enough to work with developers that closely.

Believe me ... Apple is _very_ dedicated to its developers.

Disclaimer: I'm not a DTS engineer, but I used to play one on TV.

Well, just for your information, we have not received the final Addison Wesley IM VI book
for DTS use either. Makes us wonder how committed AW is to DTS :-) (who is not
even involved in developer material seeding). Apple has seeded various alpha and beta
releases of this book to registered developers, and I'm sure the cost for this activity
is far more than $40/developer.

Enough DTS bashing/defense: What about this Window Manager and Auto
Position stuff? Would somebody who has this information please post it?

ResEdit (and Rez) will let you specify an additional word to go at the end of
ALRT, DLOG, and WIND resources.

This word tells the Window Manager that you want special placement of the
window, such as "Alert position 1/3 from the top."

There is also a full API for this sort of ability.

This stuff is currently undocumented. There are minor bugs with parts of it.

I dunno what the official ruling is on it. Someday, it might get fixed up and
documented, maybe not. Experiment if you feel comfortable doing so.

You might look at the "new" 7.0 Desk Accessories and control panels. I think
that some of them use this for their windows.

Caveat Emptor.
