[comp.sys.mac.programmer] MacWrite Format

muller@ditsyda.oz (Carl Muller) (01/05/89)

Help! Where can I get information on the disk format MacWrite uses?
I think it is in TechNote #12; how can I get this without waiting
months for the Apple beaurocracy to ponder my request? Are TechNotes
archived 'somewhere', or do any of you have this helpful information?
A previous poster asked for quickdraw internal formats - these are
given in TechNote #21 (I have the index, but not the interesting
documents themselves!) It would seem to be useful for netters to
know how to get documentation.

Please email to me at muller@ditsyda.oz and I will summarise to the
net. (Apple says it distributes to bulletin boards etc. without
copyright restrictions).

I am trying to write a bibliography system in HyperCard for the mac+
with external functions in MPW C, and I need to be able to output
text in bold, italic etc. for citations. TEXT files do not have this
capability and MS Word format made me go weak at the knees, so I am
hoping there is some simple format (perhaps MacWrite) which will let
me output files with special styles.

Thanks in advance for any help.

This depends. If you mean the MacWrite file format as used in MacWrite 4.5,
4.6, and 5.0 then it has been published and is available upon request from
Claris Customer Relations. If, however, you mean the MacWrite II format, then
that is proprietary, but is relatively freely licensed (without charge). In
either case, XTND 1.3 will be shipping from APDA next month and will include
translators for both those formats. The MacWrite 5.0 translator even comes
with source code. You would probably be better off using XTND, especially
since Apple announced that future translation architecture in the System would
support XTND 1.3 translators.

How does one go about contacting Claris for receiving documentation on this
file format?

Flames to /dev/null.
