The Alias Manager is available to system extensions, but for some reason the part of the OS which opens them doesn't call ResolveAlias. To the rescue: INITLoader, an official (at least semi-official) Apple system extension, distributed on the beta and golden CDs, and available on various BBSs and ftp sites.
