[comp.sys.mac.programmer] MPW 3.2 Shell comments

ldo@waikato.ac.nz (Lawrence D'Oliveiro, Waikato University) (06/10/91)

The MPW 3.2 Shell has been released, on the System 7.0 "Golden Master" CD.
Naturally I upgraded straight off from 3.2b12. Here are some impressions
from a couple of days of use.

First the pluses:

Text entry is noticeably faster--back up to 3.1 speeds, in fact!
Even scrolling in 8-bit mode seems faster on my vintage II.

Extending the selection using shift and the arrow keys now correctly
autoscrolls in both directions. *And* when you reverse direction and
try to reduce the selection, it doesn't suddenly start extending it from
the other end. Bravo!

Command-shift-left- and right-arrows now extend the selection to
the beginning and end of the line respectively. At last!

Context switching under MultiFinder is noticeably quicker. I guess
it must be doing less in between each call to WaitNextEvent. Nice.

Now the minus:

In the beta versions of 3.2, I could use the "Clear" key on the
numeric keypad to delete the character following the insertion
point. The release 3.2 no longer supports this, and the release
notes make it clear that this only works with the extra "Delete" key
on the extended keyboards. For shame! I don't have an extended keyboard,
and don't see the need to pay for function keys just to get this
capability. Is there any patch I can apply to get this feature back?

I wish that I had a clearly convincing reason for why the "Clear"
function was removed. All I have is the reason put forth in a study
done when the keyboard functions were redesigned, which is that using
Clear would be in violation of the HI Guidelines. I'm not sure what
that means.

Anyway, here's a secret. (I don't think it's that big of a secret, but I
hope the MPW guys done kill me, just the same. Actually, I didn't even
know it was a secret until I failed to find it in the release notes.)
Type "SetKeys" in the Shell, and examine the output. I'll let you
figure things out from there.

You could also change your KCHR resource to put right-delete on the
clear key in ALL your programs. Or just put it on shift clear or
something. Playing with the KCHR of the system is good.

There are a couple of undocumented ways to change the behavior of the
MPW Editor.

If you set the shell variable NewKeyBoardLayout to 1, the clear key will
function as it did previously. This will also change the behavior of
command-delete so that it deletes to end of line instead of end of file.
To delete to end of file, you need to use command-option-delete.

There is also a way to change the individual key bindings. The command name is
BindKey, and it has a commando so you can figure out how to use it.

To make the editor so that you can Cut and Paste text without losing markers,
set the shell variable InhibitMarkCopy to 0.

These are undocumented features that are likely to disappear in future
releases. They are untested and are not supported by Apple.

Hope this helps,

However, they're extremely useful.

Please: Don't let them go away again!
