[net.micro] Hard disk controller needed

sdyer@bbncca.ARPA (Steve Dyer) (01/04/84)

I just obtained a Seagate ST-506 hard disk at a fairly good price, and I am
now faced with the prospect of interfacing it to my Radio Shack Color
Computer running OS-9. I don't expect to find any Color Computer hard disk
interfaces for sale in the aftermarket, so I would like to hack up a
home-brew CoCo-bus-to-generic-hard-disk interface. A hard disk controller
using the SASI bus would be fine, if it can handle the ST-506 signals, but
I will entertain any controller which could be hooked up to the CoCo bus
(pretty vanilla, but non-standard) using a minimum of extra logic. Low
cost is an important consideration, though I may have to compromise here.

Anyone have any suggestions for a controller?
Anyone recommend any particular companies (manufacturers or distributors)?
Anyone want to buy an unused ST-506 Winnie? (heh, heh, just kidding, so far...)

SASI-to-ST506 controllers are very common, and cheap. Some names
(no endorsements meant) are Xebec, DTC, Shugart, Western Digital, etc.
A typical OEM quantity one price is around $300. You'd have no trouble
if you lived in the Bay area. If not,...?
