Hi,

You want to install patches in the user-defined functions ^Q,^W,^E, and ^R.
These can be multiple key sequences, which is quite handy if your printer
uses ESCape sequences like mine does. Check your Word* manual on how to go
about defining your own functions.

I didn't see the question that prompted Fred Brundick's reply about using the
^Q,^W,^E,^R user options in Wordstar*. As long as the subject has come up, I
have a question that perhaps one of you readers could answer for me. I have
Wordstar* running under CP/M and I have a dot matrix printer. As a result of
this combination, I cannot use many of the standard features. Things like
super-script and sub-script are assumed to be done with half-spacing. But
on my printer (which cannot half-space either direction) they are done by
printing half-height characters. Similar situations exist for bold printing,
double width, italics, etc.... All of these features use escape sequences
that are different from what Wordstar wants to apply. As you can see, the
four user options available are insufficient to cover my needs. In addition,
when you set them up, they aren't given a description in the menus. So, my
question is - is there a way to change the standard options to fit my require-
ments? Obviously, I don't have the source for Wordstar. Can anyone help me?

                                     Thanks,
                                       Pete Criqui

If you run through the Wordstar installation again and perform a
custom printer installation, you can lie to it. For example, when it asks
you for the character sequence to switch to alternate character pitch, you
can give it the character sequence to switch to half-height characters.
This is not a pleasant solution, but you will be able to access those
capabilities that Wordstar doesn't allow for. Obviously, Wordstar will not
adjust its menus to reflect the inconsistency.

Upon re-reading your message, it occurred to me that just performing
a custom installation might solve many of your problems. Wordstar does provide
for many capabilities (including boldface, but I don't have the manual handy
to check for the others). If you have the latest version, a custom printer
installation is easy. Just a matter of sitting down with the printer manual
and answering a lot of questions. Older versions are very unfriendly.
