I'm glad screen 23 caused so much concentration... This article is just to let you all know that shortly I'll be posting another package of wanderer screens. Anyone out there who has designed a screen that they think is good enough to be included should mail it to me at the address below along with a solution. The preferred form of solutions is obtained as follows: tee solution | wanderer -e screen Then split long lines (>80 char) with a newline. When 'waiting', use a non-whitespace character (eg '.') as some brain-ded (sic) editors like to truncate trailing whitespace.... To see the solution, just cut out all newlines and use cat solution - | wanderer -e screen This runs the editor, and then gives you back control. Happy wandering... -Steve -----------------------------------------+------------------------------------ JANET: maujp@uk.ac.warwick.cu | "I wonder as I wander, out under ARPA: maujp@cu.warwick.ac.uk | the sky .. Re: New Wanderer screens What do you mean screen 23 was a lot of trouble?? You are speaking as if you haven't wrestled with screen 49 yet!!! Now THAT one is a cause for loss of sleep. I can hardly wait for the new collection. Please hurry!!! P.S. In the original 49 screen package, screens 46 and 47 were just duplicates of 22, 23. Please watch out for this type of "error".

I have a feeling that I tested this one with the wrong version of the binaries (ok , so Im a sievehead, but I do have other things to distract me, like work and exams etc). I dont have the soln file any more, but I suggest that you alter it slightly by doing this: (middle section of screen.49) * / \O / #*### # #:############::# \+< #:S:::# >T* # ############S/C#S##O#O#O#O#O#O#O#O#O#O# *<<<<<<<<<<*#:S:S:#>*::::::::::::::::::+ ##O#O#O#O#O############O#O#O#O#O#O#O###A >I can hardly wait for the new collection. On our site Ive replaced 46 and 47 with 56 and 57... but you dont have these yet (:-). It *is* difficult to keep track of so many, but still apologies, etc, to everyone. -Steve -----------------------------------------+------------------------------------ JANET: maujp@uk.ac.warwick.cu | "I wonder as I wander, out under ARPA: maujp@cu.warwick.ac.uk | the sky .. Re: Wanderer screen 49 No! No! Don't change ANYTHING in the screen! It IS soluable as published. And (in hindsight) a LOT of fun. I felt I had indeed accomplished something (useful? hmmmm :-)

Although this screen is very hard it can be done as posted. That is: (middle section of screen.49) * / \O / #*### # #:############::# \+< #:S:::# >T* # ############S#C#S##O#O#O#O#O#O#O#O#O#O# *<<<<<<<<<<*#:S:S:#>*::::::::::::::::::+ ##O#O#O#O#O############O#O#O#O#O#O#O###A I can post a solution if anyone really wants to give up and see one way of doing this screen. Contrary to the the previous postings, I found screen 49 *NOT* that difficult to solve - screen 44 (?) took much more time for me to figure out. BTW, what is the "perfect" score for wanderer (as posted). I got a final score of 39,688 - has anyone done any better? I had to leave some edible turf on several screens - anyone want to post a list of screen #/how much. I will post my list tomorrow (after I go back & look). Art Boyne, boyne@hplvla.hp.com

Screen 49 -- ok, it is possible, I admit it.... but its an evil solution!
Next screen package coming when I have 1 or 2 more submissions.

Hah. I got: 1 40576 51 meulenbr killed by a non-existant screen You'll have to try harder :-) Anyone a better score on 1-50? I had to leave some turf, but don't know any more how much and where. Art, your turf list never reached us. Could you mail me a copy? By the way: I have to point out one thing. I had a screen.4 with lines which were too short. I replaced screen.4 with the one from the very first distribution. This is exactly the same screen, but with the proper line length.
