[net.micro] old c64 problems

blk@sytek.UUCP (Brian L. Kahn) (01/12/84)

I read a review of the EOA music construction set in net.micro, and
i can't reach the author by Email.

I have the music const. set, and i also love it, but i have the same
problem of some 'instruments' not playing, and others sounding strange.

My local commodore dealer claims to have no knowledge of any problems
with the old c64 ... but then my local dealer has no knowledge.

Does anyone out there know:
1) What problems Steve referred to in his article, apparently bugs in
the old c64's that affect SID access/use?
2) Any other bugs in old c64's?
3) What differences there are in the new ones?
4) Why there are eight pins now?
5) Is there a new video chip in the new c64's, or is it just being
	used differently?

thanx.

Brian Kahn commented about how his "old" C64 was not quite
compatible with Electronic Arts "Music Construction Set".
I believe some instruments did not sound right, and on occasion
some voices were missing. I cannot offer any solutions,
but am very interested in how he and others have solved the problem.

This complaint does get at a general issue, however.
To what degree do third party software houses support their product?
I would suggest that Brian call up Electronic Arts (collect) and
find out what their customer support is really like.
EA appears to have some terrific software that can be used on the C64
(and also on
Apple) including Pinball Construction Set and Music Const. Set.
I would think an appropriate response from EA would be to replace Brian's
disc with a more compatible version free of charge, or to suggest
a simple hardware solution, or to give him his money back.
Any comments from anyone about EA or any other software company?

Waiting for comments before I construct music or pinballs,
Rich Sachs

Although I can't answer all of your questions about the differences between old
and new c64's (e.g. any SID changes) I have posted a listing of several changes
in the 3 versions of the c64. You can find my article in net.micro.cbm. (Gee,
don't you Commodore users out there know about the existance of net.micro.cbm?)
