[comp.sources.games.bugs] can't get Xconq fonts to work under X11

geary@giza.cis.ohio-state.edu (Lord High Everything Else) (08/07/90)

I can't get Xconq to use the proper fonts when it runs under X11
(R2, R3, or R4). All that comes up is normal text instead of the
proper Xconq font. This hasn't been a problem until now, because most
people around here used X10, under which Xconq works fine, but soon
we'll be upgrading from Sun 3/50's to Sun SLC's, which don't run X10.
This is what I get when I try to run Xconq under X11R4. Anyone have
any idea what is going wrong or how to fix it?

Welcome to XCONQ version 5.1 (7/20/88)

                              XCONQ NEWS

Sorry about the X11 version not working, but no one seems to know what
is causing the problem.

Please wait six days while I create the world...

The time is WW II ca 1945.
Can't open fonts "xconq" or "/usr/games/lib/xconq/xconq.snf" on "unix:0.0"
Substituting another font...
Can't open fonts "standard" or "/usr/games/lib/xconq/standard.snf" on "unix:0.0"
Substituting another font...

The outcome remains undecided, but you're probably the loser!

It seems that Xconq needs lots of work to run under X11. Here at USC,
we cannot even
get it to open a display under X11. Any ideas? It ran fine under X10, but
they have stopped supporting it.

We have a version of XConq 5.1 here that works fines. Is your font
path set correctly to include the xconq fonts? If not, the program
will use default fonts.

Go to the directory where the fonts are located and do the following.

mkfontdir # Makes it a font directory
xset +fp $cwd # for some reason fp+ doesn't work on our machines
xset rehash

By the way, Stan Shebs released version 5.3 of Xconq last year. You
can ftp it from his former school. I think the ftp site is in the
docs.

What version?? With 5.1, I've been running it for almost two
solid years.

BTW - re: font problem. Make sure you mkfontdir'd in the font
directory.

Adding fonts to fonts.dir file should help.

In src/games on scam.berkeley.edu, there is a version of Xconq,
xconq5.3.tar.Z, which runs fine under X11. Have fun!
