I just reread through this whole xconq thread, and I found that there's been no answer to the original question (which I didn't pose): Where is xconq (not Conquer)? Is there an FTP site I can glom it from? apologies for the straightforwardness.. -eh

But since I didn't (and still don't) someone else will have to respond. Sorry -- (O)(O)(O)(O)(O)(O)(O)(O)(O) (O)(O)(O)(O)(O)(O)(O)(O)(O) (O) !the doctor is out! Try ftp'ing from uunet.uu.net (sorry, don't know the numbers).
There is an archive for games on there with index files... Search
& thou shalt find...

The last time I checked mgse had a copy of xconq, but the last time I looked
was over a year ago. Which brings me to the question I have. After
reading this discussion, I realize I'm under a mis-impression of xconq.
I thought xconq was an X-window version of conquer. I see that it being
related to conquer is untrue, now I am wondering if it is a X-window or
curses based game or both?

Is there an FTP site I can glom it from? The most modified version is at paul.rutgers.edu, 128.6.5.60, in /pub/xconq. It doesn't allow as many computer players as some others, and one or two commands are missing (like "wait until a transport shows up then board it", which I liked), but it does allow simultaneous players, moving the center of action doesn't cause pieces to disappear, and the computer player is NASTY. Attempting to attack a computer player's island with anything short of a battleship, a nuclear bomb or a sneak attack is inadvisable. And sneak attacks don't occur very often. So, to be blunt--I, the original question-asker, have decided to use the file /pub/xconq/xc5.4.4-27-91.tar.Z from paul.rutgers.edu. But I would dearly love to beta-test xconq 5.5, which Stan Shebs (the original xconq god) has announced the imminent release of. I spent a week converting the small X bitmaps to Mac SICN's and worked on making the Xconq from paul.rutgers.edu a lot more dynamic in it's memory allocation (instead of HUGE arrays of big structs :) a while back. I guess I put it on hold and it stayed there - sigh. - joe
