From: FCDSSASD <FCDSSASD@usc-eclb> Does anyone have experience with a Data Base software package other than Dbase II by Ashton-Tate for the IBM PC ? The major requirement is that the software allows more than one or two Data Bases open at a time. Dbase II is too limited in that it only allows 32 fields (254 charatcter MAX) and 1000 Character Maximum lenght record. Hopefully with the ability to use two or more Data Bases at one time, the data could be divided among the different files. Speed of operations (ie. SORT, READ, FIND, etc...) is a consideration however the main concern is the limitation of files open simultaneously such as imposed by Dbase II (c Ashton-Tate). Any responses would be greatly appreciated. FCDSSASD@USC-ECLB cheers, Brad -------

Take a look at KnowledgeMan. This is built by Micro Data Base Systems (I have no connection with them, although they are a West Lafayette company). I have read the manual on KMAN and it really looks exciting. I know one professor who has used dBASE II heavily and has now converted most of his work over to KMAN. You can have more than one file open at a time, with multiple index relations, and updates will take care of updating all of them as required. It also has really nice screen formatting and report formatting capabilities. Index files are B+trees. Query language is essentially SQL as seen on IBM's mainframe DBMS. Limits on number of fields, etc. are much larger than dBASE II. Most of them are something like 65535 fields. Tom Putnam ...pur-ee!pucc-h:ac4

You could check up on XDB a relational DBMS that runs on the IBM PC. It has been developed at the University of Maryland by Bing Yao. More information can be obtained from: Software Systems Technology 2401 Kaywood Lane Silver Spring, MD 20904
