[comp.theory] Bulletin of the EATCS

hbe@sonia.math.ucla.edu (08/08/90)

Occasionally I see references to the Bulletin of the European
Association for Theoretical Computer Science. No University of
California library has it (not even Berkeley).

1. Does it really exist? Or is "Theoretical" the operative word
here?

2. Does someone print it in his basement in Warwick and distribute it
locally? Is a journal or a throwaway newspaper? Many journals are
accused of selling only to libraries; perhaps this is the dual case:
it goes only to members of the EATCS?

3. Is it being kept out of the U.S. to forestall a imperialistic
takeover? (All we ask is oil and computer science.) 1992 is coming.

It does exist. It is distributed to members of EATCS. It is exactly what the
title indicates, a periodical publication for EATCS members. Except for
EATCS matters it also has, amongst others, a section for technical
contributions. Try to find somebody in your neighbourhood that is an EATCS
member.

----> Yes, this bulletin is really existing. It is a thick book,
that has about 450 pages. It is published in February, June and
October.

----> It is printed in Paderborn (Germany) and distributed to all
members of EATCS. It is a medium for rapid publication and wide
distribution of material of Theoretical Computer Science.
A bulletin (the language is English) includes news about
sister organizations (e.g. ACM, ...) news from non-European
research activites (regulary columns: News from Australia, News
from Japan, ...) and columns about Algebraic Specification
(by Hartmut Ehrig), Logic in Computer Science (by Yuri Gurevich),
Structural Complexity (by Juris Hartmanis) and Formal Languages (by
Arto Salomaa) (These columns are very good !). Additionaly, it contains
tutorials and research contributions (E.g., the famous result by
R. Szelepcsenyi was first published in EATCS bull. 33 (Oct 1987)),
and it contains reports on conferences and conference announcements,
abstracts of Ph.D. Theses, and ...
It is a very stimulating regular event to get the bulletin.
