A few days later, I received a call from MoU with the solution. The problem was that the Epson requires control strings including ASCII NULs to switch between the two character sets. The FW Config program treats NUL as an end-of-string marker. The solution is to get some key on your keyboard to generate the code 80H (hex). Then, define the Printer Out port to be 7 bits. Enter 80H in the printer control strings where a NUL is expected. Config accepts the 80H and when it gets transmitted to the printer, the 8th bit is removed so the printer receives NUL.
